Romano recently tweeted:
“Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers told @owynnpa Wesley Fofana is ‘not for sale’ and the club’s position is very clear – as is the board. “
However, he added that Chelsea will continue to try to sign Fofana:
“Chelsea still have no intention of giving up and will try next week in Fofana/ [Josko] Gvardiol, both are very difficult. “
The Leicester centre-back was out for most of last season due to a fractured fibula.Fofana made just 12 appearances Premier League And the UEFA Europa Conference League, the Foxes have largely struggled without the 21-year-old.
Since joining from Saint-Etienne in the summer of 2020, Fofana has made 50 appearances for Rodgers, scoring one goal and providing one assist. The Frenchman, currently under contract with Leicester City until 2027, lifted the FA Cup during his time at the club.
Chelsea continue to be linked with defender this summer
Chelsea lost Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on free transfers this summer. Thiago Silva’s deal at Stamford Bridge is set to end next summer, while Cesar Azpilicueta has been repeatedly linked with a move to Barcelona.
They quickly signed Kalidou Koulibaly from SSC Napoli but still appear to be in the market for defensive reinforcements.
Romano’s tweet suggested the Blues wanted to sign Fofana or Josko Gvardior, while Ornstein reported they had a firm interest in Dumfries. They have also previously been linked with moves for Presnel Kimpembe, Nordi Mukiele, Nathan Ake and Matthijs de Ligt. However, none of these came to fruition.
The Blues are likely to consider signing at least one more defender before the transfer window closes at the end of the month. However, it remains to be seen whether they can do that before their first official game next season.
Tuchel’s side will kick off their 2022-23 season with their Premier League opener against Everton at Goodison Park on August 6.
