TUESDAY, Aug. 30, 2022 (HealthDay News) — Customers who bought top-selling mattresses sold on Amazon and at retailers nationwide are suing the manufacturer, alleging that fiberglass in the products harmed their health.
Zinus, Inc. is filing multiple lawsuits over its “green tea mattress.” Included in the claim is a class-action lawsuit led by a California woman representing thousands.
“It’s no exaggeration to say that this has destroyed thousands of lives across the United States,” James Radcliffe, a personal injury attorney at Cueto Law, told the outlet. Los Angeles Times.
Radcliffe’s company filed a 2020 lawsuit on behalf of Illinois-based Amanda Chandler and Robert Durham, who say it’s after a Zinus memory foam mattress Walmart bought for their kids contaminated their home , they stayed in a hotel for several months and paid over $20,000 for professional mediation services. A Zinus representative told CBS News Fiberglass is the “mattress industry standard,” and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) considers fiberglass to be non-hazardous.
“Most consumer complaints about the release of fiberglass from mattresses reviewed by staff involve the cover being removed or damaged. If the cover is intact, exposure to fiberglass particles is expected to be minimal,” the CSPC told CBS News.
The California Department of Public Health conducted a study published in international journal of environmental research and public health In February, it was found that the fiberglass “has a potential risk of consumer exposure” if the zipper on the outer cover is opened.
Fiberglass is a lower cost flame retardant material. A large green tea memory foam mattress sells for about $310 on Amazon. Zinus told us it included instructions warning customers not to remove the mattress cover to protect the fire barrier inside CBS News.
Amazon didn’t respond CBS News‘ request for comment. Walmart did so, noting that it and other retailers had withdrawn from the original lawsuit.
