Alexander-Arnold has formed Gareth Southgate’s provisional 28-man squad for the Three Lions’ games against Italy and Germany.
However, the right-back didn’t play a role and didn’t even make it into the squad for the 3-3 draw Human society September 26.
With one month to go before the 2022 FIFA World Cup kicks off in Qatar, there has been controversy over Alexander-Arnold’s exclusion.
Klopp held a pre-match press ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Brighton on October 1 when he was asked about the situation at right-back.
The Germans responded with exasperation (via Liverpool echo):
“Are we really going to open the box? You are British journalists and we can’t discuss candidates until the World Cup starts. That’s why you’re hyping this up.”
“My honest opinion will make the headlines. Do you want that? It might help Germany but not England. I have a lot to say but I don’t think it makes sense.”
Klopp defended his players amid criticism of his defensive abilities:
“We’re fine here, it’s totally different. I see Trent differently, that’s clear. People say he’s not a good defender, that’s not true, he’s a good defender, he Not always defending well, that’s true.”
Klopp revealed that if he were England manager, he would choose Alexander-Arnold:
“He’s 23. We’re working on it. No matter what team I have now, I’d go for Trent. He’s great. England is blessed to have a player in this position. Reece James can play as a No. 3 and does a great job for Chelsea.
“It was Gareth’s decision. He did it. I think it’s different. It doesn’t mean right/wrong.”
Liverpool’s Alexander-Arnold has chance to get back on track against Brighton
Alexander-Arnold has had a great 2021-22 season, with 19 assists and 2 goals in 47 games.
However, the right-back has struggled this season and the Reds have had a disappointing start.
The England defender has made nine appearances, scoring two goals, but his defence has been named.
He was seen allowing his players to score a goal in the 4-1 win over Napoli at Anfield on September 7.
Alexander-Arnold has a chance to impress and silence his critics ahead of Saturday’s World Cup against Brighton.
Liverpool desperately need a win as they have won just two of their first six league games and are eighth.
