Popular theme parks, such as those operated by Disney (DIS) and Comcast’s (CMCSA) Universal has a history of closing rides and attractions for renovations, re-theming, or complete demolition to be replaced by new attractions.
For example, Disneyland in Anaheim, California closed its Finding Nemo submarine voyage based on the Disney Pixar “Finding” animated film in March 2020 for a two-year renovation and reopened on July 25 the amusement facility. Disneyland’s Mickey Toon City closed March 9 for a reimagining and major makeover of the area, including the addition of a new ride, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railroad, when it reopens in early 2023.
Universal cancels many rides
Kongfrontation was the main attraction of Universal Orlando when it opened in 1990, but it Eliminated in 2002 In its place is Revenge of the Mummy.
Universal Orlando Tours opened in 1990 and operated for over 20 years before closing in 2012 to make room for the construction of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley attraction.
Universal Studios Florida and Hollywood have a popular ride, Back to the Future, which opened in Orlando in 1991 and Hollywood in 1993. The ride closed permanently in Florida in March 2007 and at Hollywood Park in September 2007 to make way for another ride, The Simpsons.
Universal Orlando’s Twister…Ride It Out special effects attraction closed in 2015 to be replaced by Across New York starring Jimmy Fallon, while Jimmy Neutron’s Nicktoon Blast closed in 2011 to be replaced by Thief Grandma”.
On MapleStory, the popular dragon challenge in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, formerly the Dueling Dragon Coaster, had a separate Fire and Ice coaster track until 2010, closed in 2017, and was moped by Hagrid’s Fantastic Creatures Replaced by Car Adventure.

A Major Motion Picture Ride, whose rides recreated the vehicles of the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit subway system, started out as a seismic ride at Universal Orlando and closed in 2015 to make way for the Fast and Furious Supercharger. The Beetlejuice Graveyard Revue stage show ceased in 2016 and also exited for Fast & Furious Supercharged.
Universal plan to increase home entertainment
Universal Studios Florida plans to add more family entertainment to theme parks by eliminating several older attractions that no longer attract the park’s expected crowds. Universal did not say which new attractions will be built at the park, but has determined which ones will be phased out.
Attractions Permanently closed January 16, 2023to make way for new buildings, including Woody Woodpecker’s Nuthouse Roller Coaster, Curious George Goes to Town, Fairville’s Playground, DreamWorks Destination and Meet Shrek and the Donkey.
Woody Woodpecker’s Nuthouse Coaster was the only ride to be eliminated. Curious George Goes to Town is a playground that includes a water play area and various games. Fievel’s Playground is another playground with oversized props for kids to climb on. DreamWorks Destination is a meet-and-greet featuring characters from “Madagascar,” “The Troll,” “Puss in Boots,” and “Kung Fu Panda.” Meet Shrek and Donkey As it says, Shrek and Donkey meet and greet.
According to the Universal Orlando website, the last date to operate these attractions is January 15, 2023.
