Pakistan beat South Africa Passed 33 runs (D/L method) in ICC Men’s yesterday (October 3) 2022 T20 World Cup Super 12 at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). With this victory, Pakistan kept their hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the tournament.
Batting first after winning the toss, Pakistan overcame a poor start to an impressive 185/9 overall.Iftikhar Ahmed (51, 35) and Shadab Khan (52 of 22) starred in Pakistan’s recovery, adding 82 runs for the sixth wicket.
Shadab (2/16) and Shaheen Afridi (3/14) were then impressed with the ball as Pakistan kept the Proteas at 108/9 after their goal was revised to 142 in the round of 14 due to rain interruptions.
Pakistan’s batting was underwhelming in the ongoing World Cup and they stumbled again, losing four wickets in seven games. Mohammad Rizwan (four) against Wayne Parnell in the first round. Mohammad Haris, who replaced Fakhar Zaman, briefly flourished before being trapped by Anrich Nortje on 11-28.
Another poor performance by Pakistan captain Babar Azam produced six of 15 balls. He fell on Lungi Ngidi, unable to break free. Shan Masood (two) added to Pakistan’s pain with an easy catch on Nortje’s bowling.
The batting side’s recovery began with 52 fifth wickets between Mohammad Nawaz and Iftikhar. The former once again contributed a handy 28, but fell in an odd fashion and didn’t look back on the lbw even though he hit the bat.
However, his dismissal proved to be a blessing in disguise as Shadab came in and took the attack to the South African bowlers. He hit 50 in just 20 balls when Pakistan’s innings went into overdrive. The all-rounder hit three fours and four sixes on his counterattack. Iftikhar was relatively steady, but also hit three quarters and two max.
South Africa, chasing 186, like Pakistan, had a disastrous start. By the eighth inning, they trailed by four with 66. Afridi dismissed Quinton de Kock’s one duck and Rilee Rossouw’s seven. Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram stabilized the South African innings. Captain Proteas looked fluent at one point.
That all changed in Shadab’s first game. Bavuma (36-for-19) was caught by the Whites while trying to pass the ball to the third, while Markram was beaten and trapped for speed. South Africa was 69/4 when rain stopped the game in the ninth inning. They needed 73 of 30 balls when the game resumed.
With David Miller removed from the lineup, Protea couldn’t take much of a challenge as Afridi, Nassim Shah and Mohamed Wasim Jr stifled the batsmen.
