story: What happens when you donate your body to science?
reason: Sometimes the best stories answer questions you didn’t even know you had, and Abby’s beautiful story about body farms is a perfect example. It tackles a topic we don’t talk about enough — death, and more specifically, our dead bodies — and it’s hard to balance curiosity, compassion, and intense attention to detail. What a joy to read, and if you missed it the first time around, I now highly recommend it!

story: Who is responsible for climate change? Three pictures illustrate.
reason: I learned a lot this year from Casey Crownhart’s excellent climate report, but I feel like this article on who is responsible for climate change will stay with me well beyond 2022. She does a fantastic job of contextualizing the big issues before us, and in this case, behind us without feeling like total doom. (Her newsletter, The Spark Also always a great book. )

reason: One of my favorite stories this year was Eileen and Adi’s investigation into Worldcoin. Coverage of this story is important and takes a hard look at the predatory data extraction practices that many companies are perpetrating. I really appreciate the truly global scope of the story, and the author’s examination of the company’s altruistic encryption enthusiasm contrasted with the harrowing reality of its implementation.
