Argentinian mum Barbie has shared how Lionel Messi helped her son Tommy, then 8, through a difficult phase in his life.
Tommy was diagnosed with Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD) at the age of eight, the same condition Messi had in his childhood. Barbie helps Tommy by being like Macy, hoping it will give him strength.
Her story, originally shared on Instagram and translated by Twitter user @JimenaJuani, begins:
“I bought a poster of Messi; we hung it on his bedroom wall. We told him he would do the same as his idol. And let him see that this is not an obstacle for Lionel to achieve his dreams . I know it’s good for my son.”
Barbie got in touch with Messi’s father, Jorge, in 2010 and —barcelona The striker is happy to see Tommy.
Macy, who had to take growth hormone for a long time, discussed the GHD treatment at length, telling Tommy if it hurt and where to inject it. He also assures young Tommy that everything will be fine.
“Messi told him that he was sometimes teased as a ‘pulga’ and sometimes he wanted to be a giant. But being small has its advantages, (you can be) more skilled and quicker,” Barbie added.
Messi, who was diagnosed with GHD at the age of 11, further told Tommy:
“At your age, I’m your age.”
Tommy grew up healthy and is now as tall as his idol Lionel Messi. His grateful mother, Barbie, concluded that she will be forever grateful for the superstar’s conversation with her son:
“Still, I’m praying that Messi wins the World Cup on Sunday. I will be forever grateful for the conversation with my son. Thank you Messi, you are giant. Barbie, Tommy’s mom,” her post concluded.
