RMT ‘must get around the negotiating table’, transport minister says
The RMT union must get off the picket line and “get around the negotiating table”, the transport minister said.
As new rail strikes begin, Mark Harper tells Times Radio: “There is a very fair pay offer on the table, which has been accepted by both Network Rail unions.
“The RMT advised their members not to accept it, but actually a third of their members still voted for it.
“I think it’s time for the RMT to get off the picket line and go around the negotiating table and try to get a deal with the train operators and Network Rail.
“It’s a fair and reasonable offer … it’s been a very difficult week for those who rely on trains to get to work, to carry out important appointments, and for the businesses that depend on those commuters.”
Mr Harper later added that he had had “very constructive discussions” with all the rail union leaders when asked if his relationship with RMT’s Mick Lynch was good.

“It’s really disappointing to see widespread disruption” said ScotRail’s head of service delivery

‘Long distances to go’, says train drivers’ union
UK train drivers’ union Aslef said they were open to “negotiations” but the train company had “offered nothing”.
Secretary Mick Whelan told the Pennsylvania News Agency that the union has been “involved for a long time,” adding: “We don’t want to go on strike, but the company has pushed us into this place.
“They haven’t paid our members a cent, who haven’t increased since April 2019.
“This means that when inflation exceeds 14 per cent, they expect train drivers at these companies to take real pay cuts – working just as hard for much less.”
“The train companies say their hands are tied by the government. While the government, which doesn’t employ us, says it’s up to the companies to negotiate with us.
“We’re always open to negotiating – we’re never refusing to sit down and negotiating, but it’s unacceptable that these companies are giving us nothing.”

“The government has justified this and stands ready to facilitate the resolution of the rail dispute. Now is the time for the unions to come to the negotiating table and play their part.
“In the long run, inflation-matched pay rises for all public sector workers will cost everyone more – worsening debt, higher inflation and costing every household an extra £1,000.
“The union should withdraw from this strike action so we can begin to end this damaging dispute in 2023.”
