Republicans are too busy claiming everything is fine, this is just part of the normal process and should be celebrated!
But in fact, the last time the speaker election went by more than one vote was in 1923, and the last time the speaker had that many votes was in 1856.
Yes, the year the Republicans wanted to take away the women. Maybe not by accident.
Lest we give McCarthy any idea, whisper it: Republican Representative Nathaniel Banks’ 1856 Speaker election took 2 months and 133 attempts.that’s a “Contested” elections, as you must know by now, are the specialty of the far right of the House GOP.
Jared Ridge Dryly noted, “In terms of sheer dysfunction, we are now exactly where we were before the Civil War.”
Meanwhile, Republicans are desperately blaming Democrats and the media for their failures. (It’s baked now.)
“McCarthy’s opposition, Rep. Dan Bishop, just told reporters that our problems are fueling ‘anxiety among the American people about something going wrong.’ Instead, he said the lengthy process ‘should be celebrated,'” Politico reporter Sarah Ferris wrote.
Yes, we should all celebrate this dysfunction! What the hell is going on with you? I mean, of course there are national security concerns, but Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), who is challenging Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), claims those concerns are “overblown.”
donald tell a reporter Americans need not worry about a looming national security crisis over the Republican Party’s three-day failure to nominate a speaker because…
President Biden will fix it.
Fair question, if President Biden is expected to look after the house and do things for them, why should they be paid? Oh yes, they are not. They cannot get paid until a speaker is chosen.
The New York Times noted that the chaos “has had wider repercussions for the country, raising questions about what happens when one chamber of the legislative branch ceases to function.”
You all knew it was going to suck, but it stopped working before they started? That’s a new low for Republicans.
“Without a speaker, the U.S. House of Representatives is essentially a useless entity. Because its members cannot be sworn in until a speaker is chosen, there are no lawmakers to respond to emergencies or crises, only elected representatives.”
With so much at stake, including a desperate attempt to justify a Republican-led House for anything other than messing up and undermining Western democracy, Republicans continue to claim they’re doing it all… for the people.
“Matt Rosendale (R-MT) just said that every single member of the House of Representatives represents the United States of America. Uh…not those who plot and abet a violent insurrection against the Capitol and America. Not those Putin appeasers . nor those who deny the election,” Norm Ornstein wrote.
This is clearly a nasty statement, especially considering that many of the 20 who refused to support Kevin McCarthy voted to steal millions of American votes in an attempt to legitimize Donald Trump stealing an election he lost .
None of this is normal. For more information, our political pods.
Kevin McCarthy, who should have lined up his votes before he gets close to the floor, probably doesn’t want to threaten his members, because it seems unlikely that someone who defies authority like the Freedom Caucus will do well to be pushed There are people like McCarthy around the reaction. Although, to be fair to McCarthy, even Donald Trump has tried to flog his election deniers into McCarthy’s camp, they haven’t done so. It didn’t help that it was Elon’s turn to hit the ball. Billionaires, millionaires, and fake millionaires are not doing so well.
Our country is in danger right now. again. Due to the choices and actions of irresponsible extremist Republicans. again.
President Biden can’t actually do the oversight the House is tasked with enforcing. That’s their job, and there’s a reason the legislative and executive branches are separate.
There are some solid guys on that side of the aisle, like Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania. Imagine a house run by someone like him instead of Jim Jordan, Steve Scalise and Kevin McCarthy types. Someone like Fitzpatrick can keep the House from getting bogged down in the conspiracy-laden investigations and petty abuses that the MAGA types are pushing.
Turning to a moderate like Fitzpatrick could even save the Republican Party, which we know is unlikely to happen. After all, they kicked Liz Cheney and Adam Kinsinger out of the party because they were patriots.
One hundred and thirty-three votes and 2 months. That’s the record. Let’s hope it doesn’t get to that point.
