Senate Republicans have been complaining about problems with the nation’s air travel system, but they have been blocking Biden’s nomination to run the FAA since March 2022.
The FAA has been without a permanent leader since last March Because Senate Republicans have been blocking Biden’s nomination to run the FAA.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he would act to end the filibuster, “without question: Now is the time to clear the runway for President Biden to choose FAA chief Phil Washington. Due to recent events, including airline troubles and last week’s technical issues, the agency needs the Senate to confirm a leader immediately. I intend to break this impasse and try to hold a hearing for Mr. Washington where he can detail his experience and answer question, and then work to get Senate confirmation as quickly as possible.”
For Senate Republicans who might be concerned about the level of experience of Biden’s nominee Phil Washington, the logical move would be to hold a confirmation hearing asking about his qualifications and then vote against him if they don’t think Washington is qualified.

The illogical choice made by Senate Republicans was to block confirmation hearings in Washington. It would be hypocritical for Senate Republicans to complain about air transport problems while denying proper FAA leadership.
The next time Senate Republicans complain about the FAA and air travel in the media, the first question they should be asked is why they blocked Biden’s nomination for the FAA.
