Former opener Salman Bhatt believes Pakistan could be in trouble if captain Babar Azzam is unable to play for any reason.
On his YouTube channel, Butt points out how Babbar has been the Greens’ top at-bat performer in recent years. He stressed that opposition teams tend to dominate Pakistan once the captain is sacked.
Butt explained Babar’s importance as a hitter:
“If Babar Azam has to be absent for any reason, Pakistan will be in trouble. He is the backbone of the batting lineup in all formats. When he is out, the opposition will have the upper hand and your chances of winning will be greatly reduced.”
Notably, Babar showed ominous form in the team’s recently concluded three-match home ODI series against New Zealand. The star hitter has 149 runs in three overs for an average of 49.66. However, the hosts lost the series 2-1.
‘Needs to improve a lot’ – Salman Butt on Babar Azam’s captaincy
Salman Butt further said that while Babar Azam has proven to be an activist as a batsman, there is still some room for improvement as far as his captaincy is concerned.
He stressed that the Pakistan captain did not know what to do when several big names were absent. The 38-year-old also said Babar’s decision-making fell short of the mark on numerous occasions.
Bart added:
“Babar Azam is a great performer. He is one of the top players in the world and has been at the top of the rankings in both formats for a long time. The whole world recognizes him.
“But when we talk about his captaincy, there’s a lot of work to be done. It’s clear he lacks ideas when he’s on the pitch. When there’s no plan, he doesn’t seem to have enough resources for a plan B.”
Butt suggested that the Pakistan team management must support Babar. He mentioned that the team needs to build a think tank to help the captain make better decisions. He elaborated:
“Whenever this happens, the captain needs to be a very good decision maker. Or, he must have first-class think thank, which is very strategically sound. If the captain lacks confidence, he needs to support” part of team management . But here, the people who are part of the management only care about themselves. “
