Donald Trump is now the only Republican presidential candidate in 2024, well ahead of his closest likely rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a new poll shows.
morning consultation poll posted on wednesday shows Trump leading DeSantis by 17 points in a hypothetical Republican primary between the two conservative favorites.

Trump leads DeSantis in new 2024 polls
Unsurprisingly, Trump’s problem comes not with his 2024 primary matchup with DeSantis, but with his matchup with Joe Biden should the president declare a re-election bid.

In the same Morning Consult poll, Biden beat Trump by 43%-40%, but DeSantis beat Democrats by a similar three-point margin.
The firm described it more as an electoral capacity issue in the general election, but it may more accurately reflect the fact that both Biden and Trump have nearly 99% popularity and the ensuing scrutiny of the Significantly negative approval ratings for both gentlemen.

A sort of second survey WPA intelligence shows a similar picture, with DeSantis slightly ahead of Biden in the hypothetical 2024 matchup, while Trump trails the incumbent.
DeSantis has yet to announce his candidacy, but many experts expect he could launch a campaign after his state’s legislative session in May.

Political Insider reported in November that DeSantis been telling the donors He is “reconsidering” plans to launch a presidential campaign in 2024.
Trump came to power shortly after November’s midterm elections.
He has since released campaign videos, one of which calls for congressional hearings and subpoenas to investigate the FBI’s role in using Twitter to control information and influence elections.

An interesting polling number is how a unified vote of Trump and DeSantis would hold up against Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. I suspect the Republican lead will be much higher than 3 points.
The latest Morning Consult poll was conducted over the weekend. It’s unclear whether Biden’s approval ratings against DeSantis and Trump will be negatively impacted by his escalating classified documents scandal this week.
