Writer and senior columnist for Townhall, Kurt Schlichteradamant that as the 2024 presidential race begins to heat up, ultimately the Republican field will come down to the two biggest Republican figures in the country — former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
“It’s a fight between Trump and DeSantis,” Schlichter said in a recent interview political insiderBrett Smith. Schlichter cited a recent op-ed he published in which he criticized the former president, but still acknowledged that he still has great potential to control the field as more potential candidates end up joining.
“It’s been very hard for Trump because Trump screwed up and he’s at this point,” Schlichter continued. “And DeSantis is killing it, that’s the way it is.”
“Where’s the room? Asa Hutchinson? Asa mania? Pompeo mania? Who wants Nicky Haley? If you want Jeb in a dress, let Jeb in a dress show up, you know I mean, I don’t know who else. Tom Cotton is smart enough to think he’s out, he knows it’s a loser. Look, it’s Trump or DeSantis, it’s the modern Republican Party of the two factions.”

Prediction: Trump won’t run for third party
In late December, Trump posted an article on his Truth Social platform suggestion The “coming split” of the Republican Party has fueled the theory that he is or was considering abandoning his bid for the 2024 Republican nomination in favor of running as an independent candidate or forming his own third party.
This articleby American Greatness columnist Dan Gelernter, argues that the Republican establishment has emerged from the chaotic days of the Trump era and “has no intention of making us elect Trump again,” as he proves he won’t simply go — He got along well when he ran as a nominee in 2016 or in the White House until he lost in 2020.
“What do we do when most Republicans want Trump, but the GOP says we can’t have him?” Grunt asked. While it’s a perfectly legitimate question, Kurt Schlichter remains confident Trump won’t give up the fight for the Republican nomination so easily.

“What will Trump do if his dream of a 2.0 term is shattered again?” Schlichter asked. “Well, he’s not going to manage a third party – he’s probably going to do something arguably worse.”
“Why didn’t he run a third party? Because the third party run is for losers, which he understands very well, and Trump’s main purpose of running is to ease the pain of his defeat in 2020. Trump undoubtedly remembers his defeat in 2000 The Reform Party campaign, which was a vaguely humiliating campaign that lasted only a few months.”
Schlichter came up with the biggest reason Trump wouldn’t consider running for the White House without Republican support: money.
“The key is the money,” he continued. “Democrats’ disgraceful tax exemption — I hope norm-busting becomes their permanent suppository, if House Republicans have the ability to insert it — shows that Trump doesn’t have a lot of easy cash. The famously frugal tycoon never will Liquidating his assets in a depressed market to fund an effective primary, let alone a campaign in general.”
“Yes, he has a war chest, but it’s going to disappear quickly, and it’s unclear if he can refill it with small donors, as big donors are flying south for the winter — and who they think is a winner.”
