Snow fell throughout the morning and then intensified in the afternoon, limiting visibility and traction.

“In all of the collisions this morning, there was no personal injury, just property damage,” Const said. Jeff Hale.

However, by around three in the afternoon, the accident rate on the road increased.
While the total number of collisions in Middlesex County was not yet known, Hale said at 4:30 p.m. that the Middlesex OPP was responding to 15 active collisions on the road.
Several people were taken to the hospital as a precaution, Hale said, but added that no one was considered seriously injured.
Elgin County OPP officials said they had responded to at least 10 vehicle collisions as of 2:30 p.m.
“The majority of these were single-vehicle collisions with no other vehicles involved,” Const said. Brett Phil.
“That’s just because the driver wasn’t driving according to the weather conditions.”
Sometime in the afternoon, the Elgin OPP reported that their cruiser was struck by a second vehicle on the highway while handling the scene of a truck skidding off the eastbound 401.
“We couldn’t stress enough people, the roads are bad,” Phil said at the time of the incident involving the OPP cruiser, adding that there were no injuries from the collision.

When dealing with conditions like Wednesday, commuters should always allow more time than usual to adjust to slippery roads and reduced visibility, Hale said.
“If you drive politely, slow down, don’t brake hard … you’ll get where you’re going,” Hale said.
Hale said one issue he encountered several times on the road Wednesday was improper lighting in the front and rear of the vehicle.
“Either people didn’t have their lights on, or they were in auto mode and their taillights didn’t come on,” Hare said.
